The Boise River Greenbelt is more than just a path—it’s the city’s scenic artery for outdoor adventure, wildlife viewing, and community connection. And at the heart of it all is the Boise Whitewater Park, where recreation and innovation meet on the river.
Ride the Wave at Boise Whitewater Park
Opened in 2012, Phase One of the Boise Whitewater Park introduced one of the first adjustable river waves in the world. Since then, the park has expanded, and Phase Two now brings even more features for thrill-seekers. Kayakers, surfers, and boogie boarders ride the river year-round, enjoying engineered waves designed for maximum fun.
Located beside Esther Simplot Park, the whitewater park offers:
- Ample parking
- Changing rooms
- Designated spectator areas
- Direct Greenbelt access
Whether you’re riding the rapids or watching the action, it’s one of the city’s most exciting outdoor spots.
Summer Floats & River Fun
From late June through Labor Day, the Boise River becomes a seasonal highway for floaters. Starting at Barber Park, locals and visitors drift downstream in:
- Inner tubes
- Paddle boards
- Rafts
- Even giant flamingos and inflatable swans
The float includes three mild drops for a little splashy fun. Life jackets are strongly encouraged due to natural obstacles like tree limbs and debris. Rental gear, air stations, and a shuttle service at Barber Park make it easy to join the tradition.
The Greenbelt: 25 Miles of City-to-Nature Connection
The Boise River Greenbelt stretches 25 miles from Lucky Peak Dam to Eagle, connecting neighborhoods, parks, and playgrounds along the river. It’s a favorite route for:
- Cyclists and commuters
- Joggers and walkers
- Birdwatchers and photographers
Though the Greenbelt runs through the city, it often feels far from it. Along the way, you might spot great horned owls, deer, or even a river otter—natural moments nestled right in the middle of urban Boise.
Whether you’re surfing a river wave, floating under the summer sun, or cycling at sunset, the Boise River and Greenbelt offer a uniquely Idaho experience.
